Is It July Yet?

I'm not going to lie, June has been a rough month. I usually try to embrace each day, but I find myself itching for a new month on the last day of this one. It doesn't hurt that July is one of my favorite months. I know, it's hot as all get out down here in July but I'm okay with the heat. Plus, July has my favorite holiday it in.

July 4th has long been my favorite holiday. It's a day of celebration without much sacrifice. There are no presents to buy, there are no trees to put up or take down, not lights that need strung on the house. It's just a day of fun with friends and family. I have no idea what we plan on doing. There are a lot of options in Austin, but I have a feeling barbecue and fireworks will be involved.

What is your favorite holiday? Do you have big plans of the 4th?

Wishing you all a fun and happy celebration!

The Elite Warriors Series by Jennifer Kacey

Several years ago in a land far away (known as RT) a few crazy people called authors got together and decided to write a box set together. Not just a normal box set of random stories mushed together. Oh no. They dreamt up an entire world filled with Marines who were supposed to be dead. Men and women who were supposed to be unstoppable, men and women who were supposed to be ghosts, men and women who had to save the world and each other at the same time.

I can't even begin to tell you the journey the Elite Warriors have already taken in the first two books.

We're in the planning stages for the third and final book so I thought I'd share a little bit about the first two for the peeps that haven't gotten to read it yet!! Hope you love this world as much as we do!!

For decades the US Marines funded a top-secret unit known as Elite Recon. A deadly group of men and women sent to infiltrate dozens of countries completely undetected. Mission objectives so extreme casualties were not only probable, but expected.
The current batch of operatives had returned from hundreds of assignments unscathed…until one mission went horribly wrong. Several men lost their lives and the group disbanded. The remaining leathernecks were scattered in the wind with new identities. They were told to blend in. Be normal. Or face being forever silenced just like their fallen brothers.
Now, two years later, each living member of the group is kidnapped and given a chance to make things right. But this time they’re no longer under the thumb of Uncle Sam. A mysterious private backer who knows about their past has brought them back together. No longer are they forced to turn a blind eye to the lost and forsaken.
Duty is their salvation.
A new life. A new future…Elite Metal.

For more than two years they’ve been ghosts. Nothing but names on empty tombstones. Men and women forced to fade into the background after being pulled from the rubble. Dead Marines saved from a fate worse than death, but ordered to stand down while their lives disappeared all around them.
Some knew it could happen if a mission exploded. Double crossed by more than just Red Wolf. But now is their time to be reborn from the flames of a Phoenix. No longer imprisoned in the shadows. A half-life between them and their future. To make things right coming back to life is their only option.
Loyalty is their salvation but damage is always more than skin deep.
A new hope. A new family. Elite Ghosts.

The Surrender Series by Jennifer Kacey

Years and years ago the second book I ever wrote was Final Surrender. About Clay and Angela and how they were destined to be together. Why they fought it so hard and how fate has such an interesting way of working things out.
Just a few weeks ago Ultimate Surrender, Book 2 in this series was published and I honestly might love Campbell and Natalie even more! I didn't think it was possible to love characters more than I loved Clay and Angela but the snarky push me pull me between Natalie and Campbell the playboy is awesome! Here's a little taste of both and I hope you'll give them a chance!!

Review from Guilty Pleasures - "This book just seriously took hold of me, and did not let go! It is one of those where the life around you doesn’t exist, and you have to get to the end before you can put it down. I just couldn’t leave these two in limbo."

Ten years ago, Angela Meyers told everyone she went to New York to find herself. It was a lie. She fled from the aftermath of one hot night with Clay Waters. A night filled with wet heat, all-consuming releases…then his regret.
Now, with a stalker threatening to destroy her career, there’s only one man she trusts to protect her. The man she still loves, hates, needs with every breath she takes.
It’s not that Clay never craved his best friend’s younger sister. With a ticket to boot camp burning a hole in his pocket, he couldn’t allow himself to love her. The moment he lays eyes on her again, the old need—to take down her tightly wound hair, press her long, lean body to his—surges inside him stronger than ever.
But this is no ordinary bodyguard assignment. The best way to identify the voice in Angela’s shadow is to lure it into the light of day. Even if it means convincing her to trust him with her heart…and surrendering his own.
Warning: When an ex-Marine reunites with his best friend’s younger sister, explosive sex is a given. So are explosive secrets. You may never look at a pair of Snoopy pajama pants the same way again.

Review from Goodreads - "The book takes on a personality of its own. Campbell as a character is swoon worthy but his views on women are caveman at best. Natalie is very likeable; she does not let his charm stop her from calling him out on his stupidity. As the story progresses you start to see a different side of Campbell, a side he did not think that he was capable of embracing. There is a bunch of dialogue that is just hilarious; I completely laughed out loud."

Campbell Newbury could not believe who his new client was: Natalie Grant, philanthropist and pain-in-the-ass extraordinaire. Of all the security firms in New York, she had to pick his to protect her. But her flaming red hair and curves turn him on. Blond and toned, Campbell is a sex-with-no-strings guy and has bedded countless women. Love? Not an option. Forever? Not in the cards for him. But a bet with his best friend may change everything.
On their first official meeting, Natalie knew all the rumors about Campbell were true. If he weren’t the best security money could buy, she’d want no part of the cocky womanizer. But she needs him. The sudden rush of near hit and runs is proof of that. As the threats escalate, she sees a side of the bad boy he’s tried to hide—and his strong arms provide comfort and something more she didn’t know she needed. Still, she’s careful not to let her heart rule her head. They keep their relationship strictly business by day—and lustfully kinky by night. Will this unlikely couple find their way to forever or will their needs disappear once the dust settles?
Warning: Contains one at-odds couple who like nothing more than to satisfy each other’s kinkiest desires in a no-strings attached hookup. Danger and an unseen threat bind them closer than ever before.

To All The Fathers Out There

Last Sunday was Father's Day. Some say it's a made up holiday whose only purpose is to get us to spend more money on cards and gifts. I, however, am not in that camp. Then again, I'm almost always looking for any reason to celebrate something. Still, being a good father is hard work so I think I'm right on this one.

My own father died just before my fifth birthday. It's okay. You don't have to tell me you're sorry. I'm not. From what I've heard, he wasn't that great of a guy. I'm sure he had some good qualities. He did, after all, help make me and my sister. For that, I'll always be grateful. And my mom did love him at one time. She's a pretty amazing woman, so he must have had some redeeming qualities. But I don't exactly remember mourning him and I don't remember wishing he were still alive in my youth.

The reason I've shared this is so you understand where I'm coming from when I tell you that growing up father's day was never that big a holiday in my house. My mom remarried but having a stepparent in the 80s was kind of uncharted territory. I didn't feel like he was my father, so I didn't treat him like my father. I treated him with as much respect as any teenager can treat an authority figure, but I never felt like he was my dad.

Then I married. And, after a few years, we had our first kid. I brag on my husband all the time. He's a great guy. He's funny, sexy, and smart. The whole package. But you never know how someone is going to be being a parent until they are one.

He changed every single diaper for the first two weeks. How do I possibly remember this so many years later? Because when he went back to work after his paternity leave, I had to call him and ask him how to change a diaper. I'd changed my nieces diapers in the past, but she wasn't a newborn when I changed them and she was, well, a girl. Changing a boy's diaper is completely different. I got peed on...a lot.

He's taught both the boys how to ride their bikes without training wheels. This is important because I'm kind of a worry wort. I love my kids and have a hard time accepting they're going to fall down and get hurt. If it were up to me, they'd probably still be riding with training wheels. Of course, that's an exaggeration. But I think you see what I'm saying. He encourages our kids to take age appropriate risks. This helps them grow and become more self-reliant.

He also cleans up the puke. They say when you become a parent things like pee, poop, and puke don't phase you anymore. And I think those parents are amazing. Pee and poop really aren't a big deal to me. I wore both when my kids were babies. Puke, however, is a different story. I just can't do it. I'm one of those people who can't be around somebody who is puking or clean up puke without throwing up myself.

But, most importantly, he's shown our boys how to treat women. Yes, my husband and I fight from time to time. We're getting ready to celebrate our nineteenth anniversary. I've yet to meet a person who can live with someone else for nineteen years without a single fight. And I'm not exactly the easiest person to live with. I'm rather opinionated and I'm not afraid to share those opinions. But he always treats me with respect. And he tells me every day that he loves me. He kisses me and holds my hand in front of our children. He comforts me when I'm sad or stressed out.

So to my husband, and all the fathers out there who put in the time and effort, thank you! You are amazing. And, yes, you deserve celebrating. We took my husband to a distillery this year. They were having an amazing barbecue. We ate meat, he and I drank a couple cocktails, and a fun time was had by all.

Writing More than One thing at Once

Up until recently, I found I couldn't write more than one thing at a time.  Frustrating because I have so many ideas in my head all at once. I can write a lot.  Left alone (HA HA), I can write 8,000 words day. That's a pretty good chop all at once. But I was always feeling pressure. Gotta get to the next thing, gotta be faster.  And then a friend pointed out a trick.  If I have 8,000 words a day in me, why use them all on the same book.

If I calculate how many words a day I need to write to meet a deadline, spread them out from book to book. Right now, I've been using them on just two books but I can see how i could do it up to four books at a time. This is like a miracle for me.  I don't have to wait to write other things. It's great.

How are all of you? Big year of changes and some announcements from me coming up.  Hope you are well.

Starting Over

My journey as a writer has taught me several major lessons over the past seven years. Some have been good. I've had a lot of fun, hit several of my professional goals, and met a lot of wonderful people. Some, however, have been painful. Growth often requires a little pain. But none have been more important than the notion of starting over.

It was natural to me, when I first started writing, to cling to words, plot ideas, and even point of views I already had down on paper. Those words had been hard to write. Each one had be cherished. Right?

Turns out, not so much. I was clinging to mistakes because they'd taken me so much time and effort to make them. Don't get me wrong, it's great to get stuff down on paper. You can't fix words that aren't there. But, much like dates, not every word is a keeper. This is a lesson I got to to relieve this week with the story I'm currently writing.

I'd started writing this story at the beginning of June and really liked the premise, but I'd been struggling with getting it down on paper. In the back of my head, I kept saying things like, "I can't wait to be in the heroine's point of view." And "God, how much longer do I have until the end of this chapter? I can't wait for this to be done." When it suddenly hit me, if I'm bored out of my mind writing the chapter and can't wait to be in the heroine's point of view because all the cool stuff is happening to her, maybe I'm writing this in the wrong point of view. And so I deleted the entire chapter and started over again.

Yes, it hurt a little to delete so many words but the change has been amazing. I'm finally unstuck. Yay! It was a good reminder that sometimes you just need to change your prospective to find what you're looking for.

Hope you are all having a great summer!

“I want more out of life than life’s given me so far, but I’m not complaining. I just want more of it. I want the juice of life, not to live life. I’m looking to get a good partner and travel the world playing volleyball until my knees ache and my back or shoulder gives out. And after volleyball? Who knows what I can do at eighty?” She gave him the smile she’d given so many other dumbstruck men over the few years since she’d been dating. It was always the same. It also usually got same reaction.

But this time, she saw something ignite inside Alex. The backdrop of lonely sea gull cries, the salty gentle breeze and the sounds of metal clanging as work began late at the docks, only enhanced the excitement brewing in her belly. She was struck with the beauty and power of something maybe dangerous about this man. And also something so beautiful, her eyes watered.

Blurb

The Matrons of the Tao Pack are on the hunt, seeking out unmated couples who would be a perfect match – even if they don’t know it yet.
Sander Burrows is a wolf with a broken spirit. Thirty-five years from home and pack, he made a life for himself amongst the humans. Tragedy and a sense of failure drive him home into the loving arms of his family.
Aurora ‘Rory’ Hanson hates Sander almost as much as she loves him. Humiliated at seventeen when he stood her up at the annual Spring Dance she has lived a life of relative solitude on the fringes of the pack.
When Sander catches sight and scent of Rory, feelings run hot. His wolf recognizes his mate and he’ll do just about anything to overcome Rory’s dislike of him. Even accept the assistance of four interfering busybodies.
The matrons want the old Spring Dance revived and what better way to ‘help’ two fated wolves to happiness than to force them to work together on the organizing committee.
Rory and Sander discover that finding love doesn’t get any easier even when you’re in your fifties.  Misunderstandings, old hurts and the sharp edge of Miss Kathy’s tongue must all be overcome if two old friends are to achieve true happiness.

Excerpt
Familiar aqua eyes peered up from beneath scowling brows as he studied the source of the alluring scent. Wild blonde curls snarled around her head, her curves emphasized by the simplicity of her clothing, a white T-shirt covered in dirt and boot-cut jeans. Tiny feet clad in practical sneakers added nothing to her five foot five height. A warm smile curled his lips as he recognized the little hellion beneath the womanly guise. “Hey, Rory, it’s great to see you again.”
The scowl didn’t soften in response to his greeting. If anything, it deepened as the small woman reared back as though struck. “I’ll see you later, Margie.” The words were a direct snub, and he moved away from Marjorie, blocking Rory’s path when she would have retreated.
“Hold up a minute, honey. I haven’t been back in town five minutes. What can I possibly have done to upset you?” The restraining hand Marjorie placed on his arm should have warned him, but the fragrance that was uniquely Rory, fried his brain. The irrational anger she projected at him added a sharper undertone to her sweetness and rocked him on his heels. Rory Hanson was all grown up and Sander’s wolf was very happy about it.
“What can you have possibly done to upset me? I see age hasn’t lessened your arrogance, honey.” The sarcasm dripping from her lips made him grin. Far from being deterred by it, Sander’s natural dominance rose to the challenge of her glare. He wanted to scoop the scruffy little woman up and turn her over his knee until all her anger melted into sweet compliance. He stepped closer, deliberately putting himself within her personal space, knowing she would feel the heat boiling off his skin. He wanted her to know his scent, yearn for it the way he suddenly yearned for hers. He wanted to rub all up against her until forest green and sweet fruit intermingled.
