Once In A Blue Moon

So as the graphic (thank you US NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE KANSAS CITY) suggests tonight is a Blue Moon. How awesome is that?  Funny enough my oldest son was just asking me about Blue Moons recently.  So, I guess tonight I'll get to show him one.

As a writer who mostly writes Werewolves I can't help but think that several members of my packs would consider this event very important.  It got me thinking a lot about festivals and tributes.  Would they have a big pack run? Would they have some kind of party? Is it ominous? A sign of something terrible to come? Don't mind me, the Muse wanders...

In honor of the Blue Moon, I thought I'd go ahead and make sure you've all seen my new cover for Alpha Enticing, the next book in my Fallen Alpha series.  Savage, the Alpha of San Francisco, would make it such a fun event. A. Big. Giant. Orgy.

Challenges and Triumphs

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and myself made a major purchase. My car was getting old. We'd had it for eight years and had put a lot of miles on it. So we decided to replace it. We picked out a couple cars online and went to the dealership to test drive them. One of the cars my husband wanted to test drive was a Mini. Cool, I thought. I like Minis. But this one was a six speed manual transmission.

I'd learned how to drive a manual years ago. I don't remember who taught me. I actually don't remember learning. But I did remember that I had learned-at some point. I'd had to drive my sister's car back and forth to college for a semester and it was a manual transmission. So I knew I knew how to do it. Still, I was a little nervous. It'd been twenty years since I'd actually driven one.

We test drove the cars. Both manual (my husband test drove that one because I didn't trust my skills with a stick) and an automatic. And I could tell by the gleam in his eye that he loved the car. The automatic was okay. But we didn't love it. And, as crazy as I know this will sound, the manual car just felt happy. I liked being in it. So we bought it.

The first night, I took it out with my whole family in it and drove around the neighborhood. And, you know what, I did okay. I was nervous the whole time. Every time I had to come to a complete stop, my heart raced and my stomach knotted. What if I killed it? What if I killed it with somebody behind me? What if I killed it with somebody behind me on a hill and rolled into them?

I took a deep breath and forced myself to keep going. And I didn't kill it. The next night, we piled the family into the car and I drove it out of our neighborhood. That night, I did kill it. I put it in third instead of first. We were in a parking lot, though, and nobody was behind me so I survived. My pride was a little hurt, however, because I was pretty sure the people in the drive through next to me were laughing . Still, I got through it. And I got through the next two week.

Now, I'm driving in rush hour traffic. I've driven downtown to pick up my husband from work. I've driving to the library to pick up books for my kids. I'm pretty much driving everywhere. And, most of the time, I don't think about it much anymore. Sure, I occasionally screw up my gears. Rush hour traffic is rough. I still haven't gotten to the point where I instinctually know which gear I should be in when I'm in sixth gear and traffic suddenly slows to a crawl in front of me. But I've gotten pretty good at figuring out out...by the third try.

What's struck me the hardest about this whole experience is the how awesome it's made me feel. Yes, I'd driven a stick before. But it'd been so long that I honestly didn't know if I could do it. I mean, I knew I'd figure it out eventually, but I didn't know how long it would take me. And that was kind of scary. But meeting the challenge has made me feel a bit triumphant.

...until the time I do kill it, on a hill, with another car behind me.....

Love....by Jennifer Kacey

So much of what I see these days is all about love. Not what's great about it but what someone thinks about OTHER people's kinds of love. Their judgments. Their censure. Their snobbery or contempt. Their take on what has nothing to do with them.
Really?
In a world so full of the unknown and hate and destruction that's what people want to spend their free time doing? Breeding discontent and anger?
No. Thank. You.

So my suggestion to EVERYONE out their when it comes to love?
Hold onto it.
Don't let anyone tell you it's wrong because it's not the norm.
Embrace your rainbow or your 150 shades of grey or wallow in your vanilla and make it the most epic vanilla love story the world has ever seen.

Why?

Because life is short.
Life shouldn't be about hate and judgment and drowning others in your triggers and self-righteous beliefs. It should be about acceptance, and sharing the good in your life without fear of ridicule or the dissolution of other relationships because you don't fit into a square hole someone else thinks you should shove yourself into.

I learned a long time ago to stop caring what others thought of me. To stop caring what they thought about things that had nothing to do with them.
Thumper had it right. If you can't say nothin' nice than don't say nothin' at all.

I've surrounded myself with some of the most amazing friends and family any girl could have.
I am thankful for my life. I am thankful to be who I am. Not what anyone else thinks I should be.
I could die tomorrow or the next day or the next.
And you know what I'm going to think when I take my last breath?

That I am happy and that I lived. Not existed but lived.

So today....instead of spreading gossip....instead of spreading hate....or dislike.....or sadness.....make someone else smile. Give someone a hug that may not get another one. Give someone else a kindness you've always wanted for yourself.
A pay it forward of sorts. Of Love.

Because what will you think on your last day?
For me....what-if is not going to be it......

Love,
Jenn

Laird of her Heart: Book One in the Dundragon Time Travel Trilogy by Sabrina York

Laird of her Heart: Book One in the Dundragon Trilogy by Sabrina York

When Maggie Spencer is mysteriously transported to the Scotland of her ancestors, she is stunned to come face to face with him. Dominic Dundragon, the man she’s been half in love with her whole life. A man who’s been dead for 700 years.

They both have enemies aplenty. Will she have a chance to win his love, or will this adventure end in disaster?

Read an excerpt
Maggie yelped as, without warning, the burly warrior named Declan whipped her up into his arms and tossed her over his shoulder. To her horror, she lost the hold on her locket.
“Wait,” she cried. She wriggled to get free, but his grip was too hard. When she pummeled his back with her fists as he strode from the circle of stones, he chuckled. The beast. But to be fair, he was so large, it would have felt like a kitten batting him. “Put me down.”
“I willna,” he said. “The Mackintosh will decide how you die.”
All right. That shut her up. For a minute. “Die? Why do I need to die?” What the hell had she done to him?
The man following, an enormous blond with a scar tracking his cheek bent down to peer at her. “The Mackintosh’s doona tolerate spies.”
“I’m not a spy.” Seriously. She wriggled more and Declan smacked her ass.
Smacked her ass.
She’d kill him when she got free. Just kill him.
“Yer wearing the Cameron colors,” the blond said. “And the Mackintosh’s doona—”
“Right. I know. The Mackintosh’s doona tolerate spies.” Her head was starting to spin from being upside down and jounced around with each step. Her temper was on a short leash. “But honestly, if I were a spy, would I wear the Cameron colors? It seems a little counterproductive in my opinion. I mean, if I’m spying and all. I might as wear a sign that says, oh, I dunno, honk if you love spies.”
His brow rumpled but he didn’t respond. At least, not to her. “She speaks strangely,” he complained to Declan.
Her captor snorted a laugh. “She dresses strangely too.”
“Aye. She does at that. I’ve heard the Cameron lasses are a wild lot, but I had no idea—”
“I’m. Not. A. Cameron.” She reached out and smacked the blond, but only because he came close enough. He reared back and gaped at her—as though he’d never been smacked before—and then he quickly moved out of range.
It hardly mattered, because, apparently, they had reached their destination, a camp on the edge of the woods. The sounds of nickering horses and clanks of pots gave her her first clue—she was facing the other way, after all.
Her second clue was that Declan dropped her on the ground. She landed with an oof. She glared at him. He didn’t seem to mind in the slightest. “Go get my brother, Ewan,” he barked, and the blond trotted off to one of the larger tents.
When she stood and brushed off her jeans, Declan bristled and she shot him a sardonic glare. Did he think she was stupid enough to run away? For one thing, these enormous men had her surrounded. For another, she never ran. Not if she could help it.
Instead, she made a quick survey of her surroundings. The camp was little more than a huddle of tents with the forest on one side and a sweeping plain on the other. A small herd of horses were hobbled to one side and a deer roasted over a pit fire. An entire deer. Before she could silence the thought—she often had that problem—she said, “You killed Bambi.”
Declan’s brow rumpled. “I dinna kill anyone.” And then he asked, “Who is Bambi?”
“Never mind.” She crossed her arms and turned away pretending to ignore them. But she wasn’t. She was aware they were all staring at her like she was a curiosity in a zoo, but she was taking in tiny details as well. Like the fact that their clothes were all handmade and simple. Their hair appeared to have been cut with a chainsaw and their beards were scraggly and long. Their weapons were what made her mind really start to spin though.
One held a crossbow that dated from the thirteenth century. Another had a Mackintosh dirk that resembled one she’d seen in a museum once. Declan had a simple calfskin sporran tied to his belt.
Odd. Could she have wandered into some renaissance faire? But no. It had been evening when she stepped into the woods and now it was daytime. Early afternoon. And the acres of woods around the house belonged to the family. It couldn’t be—
“So.” She flinched as a deep, melodious voice wafted to her on a hint of humor. Shivers danced through her, along with a prickling sense of premonition. “You’ve captured a Cameron spy?”
She turned slowly and froze as her gaze landed on him. On that so-familiar face. Broad, handsome, savage. Much more captivating than the sketch had been. Much more captivating by far.
She must be hallucinating. She had to be.
He was the hero of her dreams come to life.
Dominic Dundragon, Laird of the Mackintosh clan.
Large, looming and in the flesh.
Her head went woozy. Her vision blurred. And then, for the first time in her life, she fainted.

I love audiobooks. I started listening to them when I worked outside the home. I had an hour commute to and from work and listening to a book took the stress of drive in rush-hour traffic away. I also listened while working and now listen while traveling or cleaning or just relaxing, which I don't get to do very often.

I have several books available in audiobook with more to come. To listen to the samples Click Here.

TWO lucky commenters will be selected at random to win a free audiobook. All you have to do is leave a comment telling me if you could chose a fictional character to read to you, who would it be and why? Have fun and luck!

Is There an Expert in the House? by Lexi Post

First, I want to thank Cait Miller for having me visit today. I’m so excited about an upcoming project that I can barely sit still! It’s the 12 Alarm Cowboys box set which contains 12 brand new firefighter cowboy stories by 12 awesome romance authors. My story, COWBOY’S MATCH is included. Yay! This is the second book in the Poker Flat Series. Poker Flat Nudist Resort that is ;-)
I was thrilled when my fellow romance authors, who started with Cowboy 12 Pack, decided that our next box set should be focused on firefighting cowboys. This couldn’t be more perfect because my husband was a fire chief and I would have an expert in the house.
Ugh, the hardest thing about writing my story was that I had an expert in the house :-} I didn’t realize how hard it is to start a fire these days and get the whole building to burn down. It couldn’t be a finished building because then there would be automatic sprinklers. It couldn’t be an electrical fire because, despite what everyone hears, electrical fires account for only about 1% of all fires. So I made it new construction, but new construction has the problem of fresh wood which takes longer to burn. Oh, did I mention my husband went to Arson School as well.
On the other hand, it was nice to have someone who could explain to me in detail how the fire could be suppressed, how to keep a wildfire from happening and how an investigation would proceed. Oh yes, and my husband was also able to tell me about the workout needed to stay in shape for annual tests ;-)
Why was all this important? Because the hero, Cole Hatcher, thinks his ex-girlfriend, Lacey Winters, started the fire! I hope you enjoy this excerpt from COWBOY’S MATCH.

Always, Lexi

Following up on the stunning success of Cowboy 12 Pack, your favorite Cowboy authors have returned with another 12 scorching stories featuring cowboys…who are also firefighters!

Check out the hotness in this collection featuring NTY and USA Today Bestselling authors coming August 4th!

HER VOLUNTEER COWBOY (Book 6: Harland County) by Donna Michaels

COME HELL OR HIGH WATER—Sabrina York

When offered a second chance to seduce his high school crush, Cade Silver cannot resist. The conflagaration of passion stuns them both, but Lisa Binder has been burned before and resists falling for the sexy cowboy/fireman. Cade, however, is a determined man. He will win her heart, come hell or high water.

Cowboy’s Match by Lexi Post

Two Hearts, Two Fires...

Cowboy Cole Hatcher became a firefighter to support his horse rescue ranch. He never dreamed it would lead him back to his first love, but a fire at the Poker Flat Nudist Resort lands him face-to-face with Lacey Winters. She may have started the fire that ended their relationship, but the sight of her reignites his long buried feelings.

Lacey is shocked the hunky firefighter is the same man who dumped her eight years ago. Cole burned Lacey in the past when he failed to stand by her and she’s determined not to let him back into her heart. But everything about the new Cole is just too hot to resist. He melts her defenses, sweeping her away into a night of erotic passion only to rip open old wounds.

Determined to prove who set the Poker Flat fire and the original fire that destroyed their relationship, Cole investigates both, unearthing ugly truths that reveal even more damage. Now, he's not sure he can catch the arsonist or the heart of the woman he never stopped loving.

Read an Excerpt:

A third explosion rocked the ground and he spun in time to see a gust of wind pick up the roiling flames and throw them toward his men. He pressed the button on his radio. “Fall back!”

One man stumbled backward, catching his foot on the old barn wood and lost his grip on the hose. The other firefighter struggled with it before he went down too.

“Fuck.” Cole sprinted to his men, pulling them back by their coats as the flames licked at their boots. The barn wood caught, feeding the fire.

Once his men were out of harm’s way, he tackled the flailing line. A loose hose was a danger in its own right.

“Lieutenant, do you want us on the wood pile?” The question came through his radio.

Cole slammed his body onto the hose before replying, “Negative. Keep that curtain up.”

The two firefighters that had been blown down regained their feet and grabbed the hose. “Thanks, Lieutenant.”

He released his hold. “Pull back and soak that pile. If the wind shifts again, I don’t want the barn catching.”

The men nodded.

Cole turned around and strode back to the engine. The two women were still there. This wasn’t a movie. Didn’t they have any common sense?

After checking with Mason to be sure the water pressure was steady, he approached his audience, irritation growing at the petite stature of the blonde. Someone so delicate didn’t belong at a working fire, but like the owner, at least she had clothes on. “Ladies, you need to get back.” He pointed to the rise the golf carts had congregated on earlier.

The blonde smiled. “Selma sent over churros and iced tea for your men in case they need something.”

Cole’s blood froze. That voice. He studied the woman and his heart stumbled inside his chest. Her shapely figure proved she’d grown into a delectably curvy woman as he’d always expected she would, but her face was almost the same, just more refined. “Lacey Winters?”

Her brows furrowed and her button nose wrinkled as she peered back at him. Had he really changed so much in eight years? Yeah, probably. He been a bean pole last he’d seen her…the night he broke it off with her.

She gave up trying to figure out who he was. “I’m sorry. Do I know you?”

He should let it go. No need to dredge up the past. He had a fire to control.

His pulse went into overdrive. Another fire. It couldn’t be coincidence. He scowled at her. “You should. I’m Cole, Cole Hatcher.”

Even in the reflection of the flames, her face turned pasty white and he kicked himself for revealing his identity. All he needed now was a fainting woman to contend with.

“You two know each other?” The other woman leaned on one hip, her concern for Lacey evident in the look she gave him.

At the owner’s voice, Lacey recovered her color. Actually, her face changed from white to an angry flush in a matter of seconds. It reminded him of a flashover.

“Not that I want to know him.” Lacey handed the tray over to the owner and stepped up to him. She poked her index finger into his chest. Hard. “So, Cole Hatcher. Are you going to accuse me of setting this fire? After all, I’m here, on the same property. It’s not like you need evidence or anything. Feel free to assume the worst. I’m sure it helps to justify the way you treated me.” She pulled back as if touching him made her feel sick. “Good luck with that.” Turning on her heel, she stalked off, her hips swaying enticingly until he remembered where he was and who he was looking at.

“So you’re the one who broke her heart.” The owner studied him briefly then set the tray on the ground and followed after Lacey.

Shit.

Guest Diva Louisa Bacio and The Irony of Real Life

You know I’m allergic to dogs, and cats. Well, most animals send my immune system into a tizzy. Even what the doctor classifies as “small pets,” i.e. hamsters. I’d never really make it as a shifter.

Ah, the irony of a writer’s life of creating these awesome and super-sexy characters. In “Claiming the She-Wolf,” we meet Yas – a quandary as a white wolf moving back to Pack lands. Although he’s a shifter, the transition doesn’t come easy for him. With the Black Hills Wolves, the process is different for each individual, and growing up away from a Pack hasn’t made that any easier for him.

This slight vulnerability adds to his attractiveness – to me. Plus, he fights with his inner Wolf impulses that tend to want to dominate, especially his sexy landlady Tala.

Hopefully, readers will enjoy the look into Yas and Tala’s budding relationship, and for me? I’ll continue to live the fantasy. Then again, most people build up an immunity over time. And to be part of Los Lobos, and the Black Hills Wolves, well, I’d say it would be worth it.

Thanks for stopping by, and indulging my weirdness.

Louisa Bacio

Claiming the She-Wolf

When her older brother leaves the Black Hills to go to college, Tala Graystone stays behind, determined to restore their dilapidated home into a B&B for the pack. As more people return to the area, the need for temporary housing increases. Now, if only she can find someone to help with the heavy lifting.

Yas Collins fled Los Lobos as a child with his mother. As he struggles with his wolf and overpowering shifts, a desire for nature and the forest strikes hard. Black Hills, South Dakota, beckons him. With a background in construction, he easily finds work at Tala’s dilapidated B&B, but not everyone in town greets him with open arms.

As the remodel gets underway, Tala and Yas fight their growing attraction. Yas doesn’t trust his wolf urges around beautiful B&B owner. The she-wolf, however, has other plans.

Enjoy the following excerpt for Claiming the She-Wolf:

A growl from low in his throat threatened to escape. The rumble started in his chest, and he fought to keep it down.
She turned, looking down at him. “Did you say something?”
“Umm, no. Just clearing my throat.”
He needed to get his base instincts under control. Recent research showed that wolves in the wild killed in order to protect their domains and to get more space. He didn’t want to be ruled by his wolf. He’d grown up in the city, with humans, not out in the forest. His mom had tried to talk to him about shifting, but as a woman, she didn’t have the same experience.
He couldn’t go to a shifters anonymous group for help with his sexual urges. Maybe he needed to start his own support group. He snorted at the idea. At the top of the landing, Tala turned to the right, and he followed.
They entered what had to be the master bedroom suite. It was painted a vibrant lavender color, and the bed had a green floral comforter with an abundance of fluffy throw pillows. White dollies rested on the two nightstands, and a vase of wildflowers called for attention. The feminine room seemed in sharp contrast to his host. She didn’t look frilly.
“This will be your quarters.” Her lips pursed, and she blinked a few times.
The idea shocked him. “What? I’m sorry, but it looks like your room.”
“Well, it has been. But it’s the nicest room in the house, and as a guest, figure you should have it to be comfortable. I’ll move my things into another one.”
He waved his hands in front of him, as if shooing away something physically bad. “No way. No can do. Give me the second best, then. My first job can be fixing it up.”
She smiled. “Well, second best would be my brother’s room, and even though he’s on a trip right now, I don’t feel comfortable moving his stuff. So third best, and we work today to make it more, um, livable?”
Her choice of words made him pause. “Deal.”
